Muted Landscape 7
'The great experimental printmaker Hercules Segers (Dutch, 1590–1638), one of the most fertile artistic minds of his time, created otherworldly landscapes of astonishing originality. With a unique array of techniques whose identification still puzzles scholars, he etched extraordinary, colorful landscapes and still lifes. Rejecting the idea that prints from a single plate should all look the same in black and white, he produced impressions in varied color schemes—painting them, then adding lines or cutting down the plate. Segers turned each impression of his evocative landscapes into unique miniature paintings that seem out of their time. He was a favorite artist of Rembrandt, who owned eight paintings and one printing plate by Segers.'
These landscapes were printed on a natural coloured pure linen.
Linen is a natural fibre and one can expect to see some slubs or irregularities in the fabric. The natural and textured beauty of the fabric comes through timelessly even when printed. Colours on fabric will be more faded than on the picture shown.
All our textiles are designed and produced in Cape Town, in small editions. It is important to remember that with handmade products, one should handle it with the delicate care that one would with any piece of art. Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause colours to fade.
Please follow the care instructions thoughtfully. The linen used for our pigment printed pieces has not been pre-washed, so there might be some shrinkage if washed. The wool used for the hand stitching around the edges might also shrink. We would strongly suggest dry cleaning. Never machine wash, soak, spot clean, tumble dry or bleach your printed linen product. Iron on medium as necessary.
